Electrode Sheet Defect Inspection

Electrode sheet defect inspection: for coating defects, scratches, holes, edge material loss and tab dimensions in the coating zone and tab zone of lithium battery cathode/anode sheets, zone-by-zone imaging plus AI judgement outputs OK/NG.

Application Overview

Zoned inspection of the coating area and tab area of lithium battery electrode sheets

Quick answers

Inspects coating defects, scratches, holes, edge material loss and dimensions on lithium battery electrode sheets (coating zone and tab zone); the coating zone and the tab zone are imaged and judged separately.

The electrode sheet is the core material of a lithium battery cell; the uniformity of area density in the coating zone and the dimensions and burr-free condition of the tab zone directly affect battery cell safety and performance. The coating zone and tab zone differ greatly in form and require zone-by-zone inspection.

This station addresses the appearance and dimensions of electrode sheets (positive/negative), focusing on coating defects (thick edges, exposed foil, dark spots), scratches, holes, edge material loss and tab dimensions; acceptance criteria are set zone by zone.

Inspection takes place after the coating / slitting process step, with line-scan imaging on continuously running material. The coating zone and the tab zone use different illumination and algorithms, adjusted according to the electrode sheet type.

Tab BurrTab cutting burr

Why Inspect

Problems with manual visual inspection at this step

The coating zone of the electrode sheet is checked for uniform areal density, while the tab zone is checked for dimensions and burrs; the two zones differ in form and risk, so illumination and algorithms must be separate - one set of parameters cannot cover both.

Coating defects and tab burrs both affect battery cell safety, and escapes are costly, so 100% in-line inspection with zone-based records is required.

  • The coating zone and the tab zone carry different risks
  • Coating defects affect areal density
  • Tab burrs affect safety
  • Zone-based records required for traceability

How to Inspect

Electrode sheets are imaged continuously with line-scan cameras: the coating area uses diffuse/coaxial light to observe areal density variation, and the tab area uses a telecentric lens to measure dimensions and burrs — a zone-based combined imaging method.

Common Question

Why Is Electrode Sheet Inspection Split into a Coating Zone and a Tab Zone?
The two zones differ in form and risk: the coating zone is checked for areal density uniformity, the tab zone for dimensions and burrs. Illumination and algorithms must be separate; one set of parameters cannot serve both.
Can it replace manual labor?
Full in-line inspection with recording reduces manual visual inspection; however, electrode sheet standards are strict, so review of anomalies and first-article confirmation still require personnel.
What Inspection Accuracy Can Be Achieved?
To be added. Depends on line scan resolution and pixel equivalent; must be confirmed by measurement according to the electrode sheet area.
How Are Tab Burrs Inspected?
Low-angle light highlights the electrode tab cut flash for edge judgement; dimensions are measured with a telecentric lens.
Can Thick Coating Edges Be Detected?
Yes. Diffuse/coaxial light is used to observe coating areal density variation, and thick edges, foil exposure and dark spots are identified by AI segmentation.
Are results traceable?
Yes. Defects and images for each single roll/piece are archived.
Do I Need to Re-Tune When the Electrode Sheet Model Changes?
Yes. Different positive/negative electrodes and web widths correspond to different recipes; just call them up.

Submit sample testing

Typical OK/NG electrode sheet samples can be sent for measured testing: the zoned imaging solution for the coating area and tab area is determined according to the electrode sheet type.
